  • Righteous Pups - Update 02 May 2010

Our V1-4 Adopt-a-Dog, Dennis, is growing into a rather large puppy now.

Together with his mate, Pablo (who is nearly ready to go to a family) Dennis
sat happily under the table, chewing a leather bone, at a committee meeting last week. I also unexpectedly met trainer Jen with Dennis at the MarketPlace in Bendigo last week, where Jen was acclimatising Dennis to crowds, noise, lights and the bustle of everyday living.

Clubs in the Bendigo zone are beginning a huge letter‐drop, advertising the need for foster families for the Pups. With one response so far, managing
director Jo Baker is delighted with the assistance the Pups have received from Lions.

If any club has made a donation either to Cabinet Treasurer Paul Tjioe or directly to Righteous Pups, could you please let DG Jill know, so I can report a
total raised so far to the District clubs.

Please state if this donation is for Dennis, or for another dog or family your club is supporting.

  • Righteous Pups - Update 01 Feb 2010

Bendigo Lions Club sponsored a successful motion to Lions District V1-4 at its convention in October 2009.

This motion was that Lions should assist the Righteous Pups Organisation.

Righteous Pups suports the training of Austistic Assistance Dogs.

The term "autism" was first used in 1943 by Dr Leo Kanner. He published a paper about a group of children he had observed in his clinic. These children were unlike most others - withdrawn, non-verbal, with bizarre ritualistic and repetitive behaviours.

We would ask each Lions Club, when organising its financial plan for the next disbursement, to ensure the expansion of the training program for these special dogs. Through our support more children with autism will benefit from a special assistance dog.

Dennis is one of a litter of 7 pups, bought at a cost of $1500 each. By the time he has completed his training at around 18 months of age, and is ready to be placed with an autistic child from a needy family near a club within District V1-4, he will have cost Righteous Pups $29,000.00

During those 18 months he will be placed with a foster family, and will attend "school" Monday to Friday. Our District is supporting Dennis during his training, and Dennis will always have the Lions logo on his coat.

Every 3 months, an update will be sent to clubs, detailing Dennis''s progress during his training.

Clubs can support Dennis by holding a fundraiser for him, or by channeling some of your funds at disbursement time to Righteous Pups. Send your cheque to District Treasurer Paul Tjioe, with a note saying the money is for Righteous Pups.

When Dennis is placed with an autistic child, we will then be allocated another puppy to support.

If your club is already supporting a family in their fundraising efforts, please continue to do so, with whatever financial arrangements are already in place.

Please let DG Jill know of your support in this instance.

  • International Convention highlight - Lion Sheila Howard on target for 25th June 2010

Lion Sheila Howard is on the home stretch!

In an effort that leaves us lesser mortals reaching for the ’heat rub’ and Epsom salts, courageous 70 year old Sheila is on the home stretch of a 4000km cycling odyssey from Bunbury, Western Australia.

Sheila will be joining the estimated 15,000 Lions from around the world in Sydney for its gathering to celebrate nearly 100 years of worldwide humanitarian service. Sheila arrives on Friday the 25th of June on a journey that is not only a physical challenge, but a humanitarian one where she is raising money for cancer research.
